The review embargo lifted an hour ago for the 3080, mostly it's gaming but hopefully some decent compute tests pop up soon. tl;dr 1440P is improved but not massively, 4K is nicely improved. Power consumption stock is 320W as the TDP suggests, OC'd it's 375W which is what the cables are rated at so I don't know if it can be pushed further maybe with a third party card. The FE cooler is an improvement but an underwhelming one given how much extra heat it needs to extract.

Tom's Hardware has the 3080 hitting 80MH/s running Dagger Hashimoto (ethash), which is little under the Radeon VII. There's talk that maybe it could do 120 MH/s once the miners are patched for support. I don't expect the Radeon VII currently being used for mining to flood the market. But the 3080 is about double the speed of the Radeon VII for gaming, so there's a good chance that market will upgrade.
It should be a monster at TF though, with basically double the FP32 throughput of the previous generation. |

As expected, awesome at single precision, but about the same speed as a 2080 To for double.

The first delivery of the RTX 3080 cards ran into a complete mess, at least in continental Europe. Apart from Amazon Holland and Germany, five trusted sites had some stock which could be ordered from 17 September at 3pm (GMT+1 time). There was already confusion about the time as for Nvidia itself it was 5 pm instead. I had logged in into several sites with a shopping basket ready to scan. A little before 3 pm Megekko.nl listed prices for 16 third party cards between 1500 and 2000 €. I wonder how many pushed the ‘buy’ button then. Prices came down every other minute and only 10 seconds after 3pm I could see a Gigabyte card at the announced price of 719 €. As no other cards were shown on the Amazon sites I clicked the order button while the site was being overloaded. Anyhow, after some minutes it appeared in my shopping basket and it took two more minutes to pay with my saved credit card number. At 3:10 pm I received a confirmation mail with expected delivery today. Two hours later I received another mail that no cards were available and waiting time could be weeks to months. By 3:30 pm the site could be reached again and all cards were gone and prices went up by 100 to 300 €. According to a press release 800 cards were ordered during the first 30 minutes but only a small part could be delivered. Even while I managed to buy one within the first 30 seconds,I was not one of them. The Nvidia site was open for orders at 5 pm but went down soon after. As far as I know no cards could be ordered since then. It is reported that several scalpers and bots were active on many sites and you can find their throphees on Ebay and other second hand sites for ridiculous prices.
So, the bad news is that I don’t have my card today. The good news though, is that my order of 719 € seems to be valid and that I got news that new deliveries from Gigabyte are expected on 21 and 22 September, probably just a handful. Megekko.nl is a reliable company and they announced that they will respect the order times on a waiting list which will be communicated. To be continued ... |
