I can't remember them discontinuing previous gen gpus so soon (1 month!) before the release. Too bad, now the gen end used market won't go cheaper...

Hi, I've been a gpu computing addict since March 2017. My last gpu purchase was August 1. There's a shortage of the best brews (Radeon VII) so I'm starting to substitute lesser products. I have them scattered all over here.

Fellow addict here, in my case more recent, since beginning of this year. It started as what seemed like a fun 1-time experiment, but quickly became an obsession. Being a finicky addict, however, I have been fortunate (or perhaps "monetarily profligate" is more accurate) enough to indulge only in the finest of brews. At latest check my little Rathskeller holds a 6-pack of these:

Would the release of a 3080 usher the release of a 2660? aka budget 2070?

I would agree. I'm not sure how this all works from a psychological standpoint, but there's an aspect that's quite gratifying as I watch the bars in these charts shift from back to front. Last fiddled with by jwnutter on 2020-08-19 at 20:15 |

![]() I actually think about that (with regards to my own consumption)... I'm hopeful that the Cloud providers are mostly RE, and the people doing it with their own kit in their own locations are using the waste heat for useful purposes (and/or, are balancing the energy usage with appropriate use). (Just in case it isn't clear, I don't actually get out much... )

@jwnutter: Around 1.5kW, ~600w for the Haswell under-desk system with its two R7s running at sclk=3 and 4 (the gpu right over the PSU gets the latter's exhaust air, which is prewarmed but still cool relative to the gpu's operating temp, thus can run at a higher clock), and ~900w for the open-test-frame system under the glass-top monitor stand with its four R7s running at sclk = 3,3,2,2. That system's PSU is a Corsair RM850, those are known to be reliably rated and runnable-24/7-at-rated-wattage, so 900w-at-wall translates to ~800w of PSU output wattage. I've tried upping one of those 2-clocked R7s to sclk=3 which adds ~50w, but the system simply won't run stably at that higher wattage.
And yes, since adding GPUs 2-6 over the past 4 months, my electricity bills have been spectacular, ~$300/month thanks to high CA power prices. |
