Indeed! Over twenty-five years of primarily Linux usage, and I never knew of this! Thanks indeed!

When (if?) we power-cycle, we will install three of these:

We will replace the fans that came with the case. We are not sure if the computer will end up being quieter but we are hoping that will be the case. This isn't a necessary upgrade because the computer isn't super loud as it is. This is just an experiment.

We also bought a wireless bridge. So far it has been super reliable. We plan to move the computer back into our office.

So, Mike, what are you using all that big memory *for*? I was hoping to hear about interesting memory-intensive computations that can't be done on typical consumer PC hardware due to insufficient RAM.

Not much yet.

We are open to suggestions!

So far we have run a few NFS@Home PP jobs.

In a week we need to redo the system install. A few days ago a "runaway" process managed to fill the SSD (long story) and because we have the entire system on one disk it corrupted some stuff. We plan to buy a small SSD to put the OS on and then we'll use the U.2 drive for /home.

To reduce the heat in our study and to save a bit on electricity, we stripped all of our computers down and reassembled them into one big computer. (The old parts were then passed along to the feral teenager.)

So we are now running our math work in the Windows Subsystem for Linux. It works great! We really dislike Windows but it is necessary for the few games we play. Fortunately, the WSL is incredibly convenient.

We mentioned earlier that the motherboard's CPU temperature display was offset wrong. Now that we are running Windows we have a temperature monitoring app. Under full load the system runs at 60°C and it idles at 28°C.

Window 10 recognizes and supports our UPS OOTB.
