Default Intel Core X TDP 165W and noise

Hello,

I would like to know ... the owners of Core i9-99?0X processors with a TDP of 165W,
did Prime95 run on all the cores without the noise being unbearable ?

Liquid cooling? which model ?
How did you realize that ?

Currently I have a Xeon E5-1660v2 with TDP 130W but it's ok.

I would like to buy a Core i9-10980X 18 cores but I'm afraid of noise with the computer just beside me.

Thank you !

If you're not overclocking it, you can pop any large AIO on it and it'll stay quiet.

And if you intend to run LL on it, it'll be memory-bound anyways. So it won't be able to sustain a high power draw.

But DDR4-2933 quad channel is probably enough for 18 cores at 3Ghz ?! no ?
You mean that the cores will not be close to 100%-97% use ?

Not even close. You'd probably need 8 - 16 channels to keep LL from bottlenecking on 18-core Skylake X.

The high core count Skylake X's aren't a good value for LL for this reason. You're probably better off with perhaps a 10-core and a maxed out memory overclock like 3600+ MT/s.

Ok Thanks

In any case, the most powerful processor Skylake X does not exceed twice my Xeon E5-1660 v2 Ivy-Bridge;
I will wait.

How much throughput (ms/iter) for Prime95 are you getting with your Xeon E5-1660 v2?

Since this Xeon is paired with DDR3 memory, and Prime95 at the wavefront (FFT=5120K) is memory bandwidth bound with Intel HEDT systems, I believe a system using 10-core Skylake-X Core i9-9900X or the imminent Cascade Lake-X Core i9-10900X paired with quad-channel DDR4 memory at 2666/2933 (or higher with overclocking) and utilizing AVX-512 should be able to achieve at least 2X throughput vs. this Xeon.

I am currently very tempted to go for i9-10900X myself, and pair it with DDR4-3600 or 3733 dual-ranked memory. If everything works out and the system is stable, I should have some throughput numbers for Cascade Lake-X to report in a while.

@Caffreys, it looks like the Prime95 throughput of your Xeon rig is bottle-necked by DDR3 memory bandwidth. A Skylake-X or Cascade Lake-X system with quad channel DDR4 memory should yield much faster iteration times.

My i7-5960X system can do better as this X99 motherboard lacks memory overclocking support, so the quad channel DDR4 is stuck running at 2133. I'm looking into a replacement X99 motherboard to get the DDR4 running at 3000 or thereabouts, which hopefully can get the iteration time for 5120K FFT (8 core, 1 worker) down below 3ms.

@fivemack, what is the DDR4 memory configuration for your i9-7940X system?

Four 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX, advertised as 2666MHz but dmidecode says they're running at 2133MHz.

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/64gb...-16-18-18-35-x

Now, if you want silly memory bandwidth, I have a Xeon Silver 4114 system. Much less AVX512 throughput (1x at 2500MHz versus 2x at 3700MHz), but 20 cores and 12 memory channels at 2400MHz

Code:
[Worker #1 Nov 5 21:40] Timing 25 iterations of 5120K FFT length. Best time: 2.336 ms., avg time: 2.529 ms.
