wow, it released the same day I wrote the message. Thanks for informing me! I will order it.
But it still uses kernel 2.4... :/

Even a klutz like me can build a 2.6 kernel on Slack. Unfortunately Mprime seems to run slower on 2.6 than it does on 2.4.
(Hey, maybe Pat V. knew - that's why he stuck with 2.4 for Slack 10.) |

Yes I know I can install 2.6 if I want to, but I would prefer not to take this additional administrative step. I know 2.4 uses less memory than 2.6, but I didn't know it was faster for mprime. Why is that?
PS> I ordered 10.0, and I am still waiting for my slackware polo! PS2> Azureus died unexpectedly after an online update. Any good (that means: stable ) bittorrent client arround? I want to become a seed...

Also, as far as the memory use of 2.6 vs 2.4, I think there are two main reasons why 2.6 can use more: One is that 2.6 by default includes both the old and new I/O schedulers and you can choose which one to use with a boot option. The other is that 2.6 knows about more hardware devices and so has a much larger device name database.
If you compile 2.6 with only one I/O scheduler, and either remove the device name database or compile without hotplugging support (which then allows the device name database to be unloaded after boot) then I think you will find that 2.6 actually uses less memory than 2.4. (Although the vmlinuz file will still be larger). |
