The house looks like it's been empty for at least a decade and slowly decaying since, but I guess the damage was done overnight, and there were people happily living in there a week ago. It's possible they weren't living happily, but having no house certainly worsens the situation.

The tornados in Brandenburg, KY, and Xenia, OH, on April 3, 1974 were F5's. The same storm cell produced an F3 in my community, Jefferson Co. IN. (Hanover, IN, and Madison, IN). Several years ago, a personality on TWC said an EF5 is not survivable unless a person is in an underground shelter, or can get out of the way. I thought it was a mobile home based first on the shape and size, but wasn't certain. Instead of trying to track down the original source of the picture, I should have looked more critically at the picture itself. Your use of the word "structures" pointed me in the right direction. If you look at the roofing trusses that are exposed to plain sight, you'll see that they're much smaller and flimsier than those used in houses. |

Greensburg, Kansas. May 4, 2007. A community of less than 1,000 people was scrubbed to the ground by an F5 tornado. There were 11 fatalities. Very little was salvageable. This event drew a lot of national attention. Bush 43 went there to see for himself.
The town was rebuilt utilizing as much renewable energy as there was available It is considered a model "green" community. The link above is to the community website. A short video on the front page shows how far they have come since. |
