Something is wrong with the laptop thermal design. Laptops vary widely in ability to handle prime95 to full computational/clock-rate capability. I have a laptop that can run all 6 of its cpu cores at 2.9Ghz in prime95, plus mfakto on the associated igp in the i7-8750H, plus 2 instances of mfaktc on the internal GTX1050Ti at full tilt, without throttling, 24/7, fed from a 130W power adapter, and another laptop that shuts down thermally unless I have prime95 itself set to throttle its usage to about 25%, a 25W rated i3-M370. The i3 is what I use for web browsing, email, and remote desktop.

May I ask -- laptop manufacturer?

I recall that he mentioned it in another post earlier this year:

This system is a Dell G3 3579, Win 10 x64, i7-8750H, 16GB ram, internal GTX1050Ti gpu and uhd630 igp, power plan set to best performance, display operations set to use uhd630 so the GTX1050Ti is free for compute-only.

Unless he has another system also with 8750h + 1050ti, this is probably it.

I also have a system with 8750h, except 32gb ram with 1060 6gb graphics. It can complete LL test for exponents around 80m-90m in 5-6 days, alongside with running mfaktc 24/7 (about 500ghz/d per day) or cudalucas (9-10 days per 80m-90m exponent). My task manager says my cpu is running at only around 70% but it seems like ms/iter is consistent throughout the entire test, regardless of gpu running or not. It's weird.

Correct re my system. Thanks for digging it up so I don't need to. It's fairly new, and has pretty good cost/exponent. It's the system that provided so much benchmark stall fun.
The i7-8750h is hyperthread-capable, so maxing it out on prime95 would show up as 50% cpu utilization. Other activity requiring cpu time occurs through use of hyperthreads so minimizes impact on prime95 throughput

Does the Dell have dual channel memory? Their web site seems to offer only 1x8GB systems, but their web site is not easily navigated.

My Macbook is acting up and I may be in the market for a new laptop

According to disassembly of this laptop, there's two memory slots so you can buy aftermarket memory and put them in to enable dual channel. Most laptops that comes with an i7 and dedicated graphics has two removable memory slots and two ssd/m.2 slots.

If budget is not an issue, get the 32gb (2x16gb) memory pack instead of 2x8gb since the 16gb memory sticks sodimm are dual rank. It's not much faster, but it is faster fwiw.

Apple doesn't seem to care about their computer lines and their customer services lately ... imho

Mine was 16Gx1, as configured and available retail. Good to know I can get a speed bump later. For a look inside see https://www.how-fixit.com/laptop-rep...-dell-g3-3579/

(I'm guessing Apple thinks the real money is in IPhones.)
