I don't thnkl anyone can beat amazon's used book sellers, however.

I check Powell's when amazon doesn't have a book such as an old one out of print.
Much as I hate to spend anything at Amazon, I really appreciate the tip. Out of curiosity, I searched for a book we once had, but gave away. We have searched for years for a replacement.

This little jewel is called "Hot Spanish for Guys and Guys." It includes everything from pickup lines to making up after a fight. We found it hilarious. Native Spanish speakers, if anything, cracked up even more over some of the content.

EDIT: $5.99 + tax.

The titles I was looking for are as a start:

The Hunt for Red October (1984)
Patriot Games (1987)
The Cardinal of the Kremlin (1988)
Clear and Present Danger (1989)
The Sum of All Fears (1990)
Debt of Honor (1994)
Executive Orders (1996)
The Bear and the Dragon (2000)
Red Rabbit (2002)

Thank you ewmayer and Mark.

Bottom three were bought at a nearby charity shop by £1 each, the others are still on the amazon basket. In the meantime along those last three I got the Rainbow Six and reading it.

Which specific titles are you looking for? If you're outside the US I'd be happy to do a little price-comparison shopping for you.
This request is rather orthogonal to the above in that I have done a price comparison for the desired books but have little idea about shipping costs.

In the UK, only the first few Annals of the Deep Sky are available and they cost over £50 each. It is even worse in Spain. In the US each volume is $24.95, or roughly 40% of the price.

Any idea how much it would cost to ship from the US either to the UK or to La Palma? Please do not go to inordinate lengths if you decide to try to find out.

I currently see Vols 6 and 7 on US Amazon, $24.95 each, softbound - is there a hardcover edition? Tell me which volumes you need and I can start accumulating them as they show up on the site.

Re. shipping, I suggest we look for a forumite to act as intermediary: you divide your time between La Palma and the UK. We find someone US-based (at least part of the year) who will be traveling to UK or Spain in the coming year. I can ship the books cheaply to said person via USPS media mail, they carry in their luggage, you either meet up at the other end or arrange for hopefully-cheap local final-hop shipping to you.

I just bought a 1980 hardcover volume of 5 novels - Where Eagles Dare, H. M. S. Ulysses, Ice Station Zebra, When Eight Bells Toll; Guns Of Navarone - by my favorite thriller author growing up, the late, great Alistair MacLean. $16 incl. ship+tax, a tad pricy by my usual used-cheapy standards, but a good deal for quality hardcover and that much enjoyable reading content.
