The output to do with network controllers is :
00:f.6 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 200 series PCH SMBus Controller .... 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co.,Ltd RTL8169 PCI gigabit Ethernet Controller (Rev 10) Not sure if that's what you're interested in. |

apt-cache search Realtek | grep realtek firmware-realtek - Binary firmware for Realtek wired/wifi/BT adapters Edit. Ubuntu needs sudo in front of the above command. Last fiddled with by paulunderwood on 2019-01-19 at 21:51 |

Am I meant to type both of those lines & the sudo as one string?

If firmware-realtek doesn't come with the installation and is rather online, then I've got no way of installing it with apt-get.
I'm going to ubuntuforums but if anyone's got any good suggestions please suggest. |

If that fails, download to the disk the latest firmware-realtek and run in the same directory: Code:
sudo dpkg -i firmware-realtek.deb Last fiddled with by paulunderwood on 2019-01-21 at 15:16 |

Failing the above, plug in your network card and run lspci again to identify it. Maybe it better supported than the RT8169.

Thanks for your posts paul.
I haven't failed yet. I've downloaded firmware-realtek_2016_1130-4~deb8u1_all.deb onto another machine. I can't get it onto the machine via a download (as the machine isn't connected to the net) so I thought I'd copy it onto a USB memory stick and transfer it. Is this a viable way forward? |

If it does not work, identify the plugged-in card instead, repeat and rinse.

I might have goofed in two ways:
One: Ubuntu 18.04 is based on Debian 10 Buster/Sid (unstable) and the corresponding realtek firmware is https://packages.debian.org/buster/firmware-realtek Two: Your 8169 is not covered with this firmware anyway. Therefore I recommend you fit a new NIC into a PCI slot and run lspci or know that the NIC is 18.04 compatible Sorry for the confusion
