I noticed ECO mode setting in Ryzen Master while troubleshooting my 3600 (AGESA 1.0.0.3ABB) so it already exists? Basically even at stock the system wasn't LLR stable (random reboots). Turning on ECO mode reduced the power/frequency/temperature but didn't eliminate the problems and I kinda left it since then.
What was interesting was the the setting changed PPT limit from 88W stock to 60W from memory. The impact to clock wasn't that huge, but obviously it made the corresponding power saving. I intend to revisit this in more detail as it got interest elsewhere also. I do think the default running condition is biased a bit too aggressively for higher clocks. |

Even after all these years, there is no Ryzen Master for Linux... sure, there are utilities that replicate some of the functionality, but not everything. Especially not any of the Zen 2 stuff.
Anyway my 3600 has been rock solid stable ever since I installed it (about 2.5 months now), running mprime 24/7, and letting it run at whatever speed it likes results in about 3.9 GHz on all cores and 76C. If I deliberately block some of the airflow or fiddle with the CPU fan speed, the processor is more likely to stay at the same temperature but drop clocks a bit to stay there. Very GPU-like behaviour in that way. But I haven't played around with it after the beginning - if it works, don't fix it. |

3950X reviews are out today. One thing I found interesting are the stock power consumption figures: https://youtu.be/M3sNUFjV7p4?t=1419
tl;dr The 3950X, at least the sample of one we have here, is much better binned than the 3900X (stock to stock consuming 93% the power of a 3900X in an all-core Blender test and completing the test in 78% of the time). I expected the 3950X to be pushed much closer to the ragged edge out of the box, nice that it isn't. It was listed in the 1004 changelog so maybe it was tweaked or just updated to include the upcoming variants. |

I am wondering how the 3990x would perform with Prime95. Is it working on Windows 10 with the 128 threads?

I guess it is a new "problem" for consumers to have so many cores/threads available, but apparently behaviour can be problematical depending on version of Windows and software awareness of high thread counts.

The 128 vs 64 threads problem on various versions of windows doesn't matter for P95, since hyperthreading isn't helpful for P95. That is, you wouldn't want to use more than 64 threads anyway.
I imagine you wouldn't want to use close to 64 threads due to memory bandwidth! |

If you turn off SMT then that simplifies things. I don't know if the way Prime95 interacts with Windows will be limited by the groups or not. Worst case with SMT on it might effectively be limited to the 1st 32 cores only.

This is the best Zen2 laptop config I've seen to date for cheap CPU compute. No dGPU, 16GB dual channel RAM, 6 core no SMT (depending on workload a 4600u with SMT may be better price-depending). A lot less cache than the desktop Zen2 chips (only 8MB, less than some intel parts) so it'll be interesting to see how benchmarks compare. 15W TDP but you can set it to 10W TDP to try and tame temps if doing something heavy like P95. Under standard benchmarks the 4500u trails intels 9750h most of the time but with a third of the TDP it seems very positive that it's not too far behind. |
