Of course, maybe they have an elegant solution, instead.

At least some measure of elegance is needed to get a solution at all, I think :)
I know that my brutish methods haven't been very effective anyway. I've been able to get dozens of solutions with 164 unique triangles, but can't get that last one

For the record 1st solution seems to have been submitted on September 30th.
Still this must have been one of the most difficult.
I spent more effort on this challenge than any other and have noting to show for it.

I've had eight i7 cores running a c++ compiled program for about a week with no indication. But, unlike B2, my programs will only print something if all 165 triangles have a unique size.

Every extra check, adds extra overhead, which is why I have no way of even telling where in the search my programs are. I may have to run a similar program on another i7 and "assume" the others are running faster.

I believe in granting credit where it's due. Here you were almost right (off by only 5 days or so, then again a few hours is subjective).
But I still think you were wrong about the relevance of the empty sum thingy. Just saying.

That would be my guess. It does say,

This is the only generic special note I see about submitted solutions. There is no "extra credit" asterisk as there was with the "obscure triples" problem.

Still plausible. However, yes, there is a solution with S=567. :-)
Let's see if that yields an asterisk.

S=552 exists too. I guess the limit is between 450 and 500.

I finally managed to find a solution (yay!). But getting down to S=567 or S=552 or lower I'm guessing will take a different method than the one I'm using. Those are impressive scores.
