Lost Prime95 folder and progress.

So due to a Linux bug I had to completely reinstall my system and forgot about backing up Prime95. Due to some stupid decision making on my part my name assigned to the exponent has been changed to -Anonymous- as well: https://www.mersenne.org/report_expo...exp_hi=&full=1

Via advanced test I manually entered the exponent and started working on it again, but when I try communicating with PrimeNet it gives me the following error:

Will this exponent be assigned to my name again? Am I doing something wrong? Is the previous work (72.6%) lost?

I think you can stop the program, and edit the prime.txt file. Look at the V5UserID= line, and set the value to your username. Then restart the program.

All of your work-in-progress is stored in a file called p81847169 (and older versions with the same name with suffix .bu, .bu2, etc. if applicable). This is the only place where your work-in-progress is stored, it isn't sent to the server. So if you wiped out your old filesystem with no way to recover it, then your work is unfortunately lost.

Might be worth your while to buy a modest sized, speed is no concern, economical memory stick, plug it in, and set up a cron job to daily save your mprime folder to the stick. That somewhat protects against both operator error and system drive failure.

Log in to mersenne.org and go to https://www.mersenne.org/workload/

At the bottom of that page, look for a line in the form of:

Test=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,81847169,75,1

If you don't find it, then it probably wasn't assigned to your username at all, or somehow got unassigned.

If you do find it, then stop the program and edit the worktodo.txt file. Replace the AdvancedTest=81847169 line with the above line instead (except with the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx substituted with the correct assignment ID), and then restart the program. Maybe recheck the prime.txt file to make sure that V5UserID= is still there, with the right spelling and capitalization and the right username.

It got changed from my name to -Anonymous- because I was trigger happy with 'Drop checked CPUs' and 'Merge checked CPUs' without knowing the consequences. Anyway, thanks for the effort of replying, I'll see what happens.

Do you have your home directory on a separate partition? I've done that for a while now because it allows allows you to do some neat things like share home between distros, makes backups easier and you can recover from distros breaking relatively simply.

Good idea. Will do that as well.

By the way, I let the manual testing continue on that 'lost exponent' (restarted on 0%) and everything is fine, it got picked up: https://www.mersenne.org/report_expo...1847169&full=1

Even though it said it was an untrusted software version, or that the exponent was already assigned.
