I heard internally that a large company (which I won't name publicly) bought up the entire supply of Voltas for the first year or so. So there's none left for everyone else.

But this is just a rumor. I have no way to confirm it.

You would hope they wouldn't let that happen again after they ticked off so many gamers when the BitMinors bought up all their cards.

I'd assume that's a small price to pay if there's a lot of money to be made.

If true ( which I doubt ), it might be something like the Tesla V100 boards. However, Nvidia usually reserves big batches of these for the monster super computer builders, especially the machines that get lots of press coverage.
Perhaps they just bought a big batch.
But entire supply of any board? No way no how.

Maybe the NSA is upgrading their voice to text conversion for all telecom traffic into, leaving, or within US infrastructure and made them an offer they couldn't refuse.

We'd like to buy the first x,000,000 units of your latest model, to be shipped to Camp Williams, Utah as they are produced, in bulk packaging. What do you mean, you'd like to serve other customers also? Our order is a matter of national security. You have a good company, it would be a shame if something happened to it. Let me know what you decide, before noon Friday, when I have lunch with the heads of the FTC, the IRS, the DOJ, the FISA court, and a few other friends.

Silly question, soon answered myself, how did Harold Finch find John Reese to lend help? Why, he used the Machine, of course.

Ugh. AI big brother, never sleeps, millions of eyes open 24/7.

Why would Harold Finch decide to strip the one very relevant bit, is the person of interest the perpetrator or the target?

I assume based on some of your prior writings about crypto and surveillance, that you might be equally inclined to regard the Person of Interest show as fiction or a loose documentary with the names changed to protect the show personnel from the guilty.

That some of my mersenne worker nodes are also named for bird species (like Finch's aliases) is pure coincidence. (It started decades ago with children in the house, and naming computers for cartoon ducks.)

In one of the backstory-flashback episodes of the series Finch is shown with his previous "helper monkey" (Root's 'affectionate' term for Reese), who in pursuing a POI of his own has a run-in with still-with-the-CIA Reese, and gets himself killed later in the ep. I don't know if it was ever made completely clear during the series, but that may have been where Finch first 'encountered' Reese.

Based on Finch's strong sense of ethics portrayed throughout the series, he would have done so - and they may have had the character state just that at one point, don't recall - to force an actual human to investigate the POI and have a chance to examine context and nuance, rather than just relying on a machine to label 'bad guy' and issue some kind of remote-control kill order.

The show struck me as a warning about a possible kind of not-too-distant future ... and when the Snowden NSA revelations hit the headlines midway through (IIRC) season 3, let's just say there was a strong sense of 'sh*t got real'. Of course in the real world it;s not just the government's AIs which are making ever-more crucial decisions about human lives.

Speaking of, the weekly Sat-to-Sunday late-night syndication episode of POI just started, tonight's installment is the Season 5 episode "6,741". Gotta go!
