Default Processor for X79 motherboard

I have an X79 board with an i7-4930K processor in it.

What is the fastest processor that this board can take? I imagine E5v2 Xeons from decommissioned supercomputers are starting to appear on eBay.

(Also the same question for an X99 board with an i7-5820K, but I have a feeling that the Haswell and Broadwell Xeons don't work on X99 boards, and the i7-6950X is still expensive on ebay)

Not sure if there are Xeons much faster than the 4930k, especially if you overclock it. Maybe E5-2667V2? Two more cores, similar stock clocks although I haven't compared fine detail.

E5 v3 do work on X99, I have a 14 core E5-2683v3 I've used in two different X99 mobos.

A retail E5-2683v3, or one of the engineering-sample ones that float around on ebay?

ES, doesn't clock quite as high as retail, but the price is a lot different too. Just had a quick look on ebay, they cost a lot more now than when I got mine.

Only recently got a used mobo to house it, as I had stolen the original one for a 5820k. Now I'm suffering a ram shortage again as I really don't want to buy more, and will likely steal it from lesser systems on the weekend.

We have these in a mini-cluster. The 6-core-x2HT processor and the board are beasts, and still offer decent performance. However, the year is 2018, I would not throw away money on upgrades.
The exception is memory. This board is quad-channel, if you have only two DIMM, I would definitely add two more of the same specs, or if you had more than one machine, move the old modules to half of the machines and put new (faster) memory in the others. It takes up to 2400Mhz DDR3 modules with overclocking...

Just been having another look at CPUs for X79...

E5-2690v2, 10 cores 3.0 base, 3.3 all core turbo, 3.6 single core turbo, 130W TDP. One seller on ebay in UK with multiple, £221 BIN & offers taken.

Also E5-2689. 8 cores, 2.6 base, 3.3 all core turbo, 3.6 single core turbo. 115W TDP. Some pretty cheap internationally even if you factor in customs fees.
