It is still new to me -- when I set it to 1600 it complained at posting.

I set the BIOS to "performance" and "xmp" on, and the RAM is now running at 1600 with the 4770k running LLR at 3699.951.

The box borked again. I have already ruled out the PSU. Now that I have a couple of mainboards, I am about to get a couple of CPUs. Incidently, I am typing from the system but it is running on 1 core , set in BIOS.

I have had situations where running RAM at its rated speed caused problems, but bumping the speed back would be reliable.

After further investigation, I discovered the BIOS wasn't following the RAM's voltage specs. The DRAM was clearly labeled 1.65V, but the BIOS auto setting set it 1.50V. After manually setting the DRAM voltage to match what the RAM requires, I could then run it at full rated speed reliably.

The RAM voltage was coloured "purple". I set it to 1.65V and hey presto it's now running on all 4 cores, "performance" and "1600Mhz" RAM.

It failed again

It is now running at "optimised defaults" and has been up for 13 hours, with LLR timings slightly longer -- about 4%. Core temperatures are about 60C. However, stability over speed is important to me. No more news about this issue is good news!

"Optimized defaults" with the RAM voltage set manually may be the path to reliability. :)

I have a couple of machines configured that way.

I've got a i7 3770k that displays similar behaviour, setting the memory to XMP (DDR3-2400) and it was a big headache. After setting it to manual voltage and DDR3-2133, it's been running smoothly.

A MSI H110M ECO board doesn't even allow me to set the memory to XMP DDR4-2400 (the specs of the memory installed) , it is stuck at default/optimised (or whatever MSI calls it), but that motherboard is super cheap ass.

It crashed after a couple of days. It is still a bit of pig to get going, but is now running at "optimal", "XMP" profile1 and then in advanced I have set RAM to 1600Mhz and 1.65v.

I have ordered a i5-4590. If that chip runs fine on the old MSI board I will suspect the 4770K on this ASUS board, and get another i5-4590.

I'd like to throw another variable into the mix.

I have discovered several times now that running RAM at rated speed is no problem -- unless you fully populate the board. For example, if the board has 4 DIMM slots and you populate all 4 slots, then the RAM speed has to be bumped down in order to achieve stability.

This was a number of years ago, so maybe that problem doesn't exist anymore. I know it definitely exists in my Gigabyte I7-950 motherboard from 2010. It supports a max 6 DIMMs, and as soon as I fill them all, I have to go from 1600 Mhz to 1333 Mhz. I think that issue is even mentioned in the manual or on their website.

Good luck. I know how frustrating problems like this can be.
