installation of amdgpu drivers in debian

It requires some trickery to install those drivers in debian: you have to modify the installation procedure, where it says ubuntu you modify it to read debian.

Otherwise the installation will fail with the message Unsupported OS.

Never install both firmware-linux-nonfree and amdgpu-pro, it will slow down your gpu

I had trouble trying to mix amdgpu-pro with rocm 1.7 on ubuntu 16.04. What ended up working was a clean install with only rocm on the latest 4.13 kernel. No amdgpu-pro, no amd sdk. I also tried (and failed) with a clean install on the 4.15 kernel. If you're still having trouble, maybe try this: https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm

I made an attempt to use firmware-linux-nonfree and amdgpu-pro, this slowed down the gpu and the check time went from 3 sec to 13 sec. very bad. And I had strange behavior with rocm and an error -30.
Now I'm using Debian with kernel 4.14.17-1 and amdgpu-pro.

Now I'm using Debian with kernel 4.14.17-1 and amdgpu-pro.

The kernel 4.16 contains a regression that causes amdgpu_job_timedout errors. Stick with 4.15 until a fix is available.

Still with the new version at first glance it gives the impression that it installs only on ubuntu. But it is only matter of editing the install procedure to make it work with debian. So when editing the file, where you see "ubuntu" write "debian" that's all.

There is a new version out, 18.20.

It has a simplified install procedure, but still must be edited to install on Debian.

With this driver version (18.30) there is a preinst script in the package amdgpu-core that blocks installation if the operating system version is not 18.04 (Ubuntu).

I have modified that script and rebuilt the .deb package. I have then tested that it installs on Debian without problems.
