Vega 56 for £350 in the UK in stock at time of writing: https://www.ebuyer.com/833190-powerc...bhbm2-2d2hd-oc

This is the lowest I've ever seen it and I'm tempted to snag one.

I am not familiar with AMD GPU's I know they don't use CUDA. What do they use?

They "use" OpenCL, which is an open standard. Common drivers for AMD GPUs are ROCm and amdgpu-pro.

But the CUDA programs do not work on AMD, and the OpenCL ones usually don't work on Nvidia. Thus the two domains do not intersect much.

This is false. Just because you had face problems while trying to make your opencl work on Nvidia doesn't mean they don't support OpenCL. Almost all of PrmeGrid's applications (for instance) have OpenCL versions for Nvidia.

That's great news to me. I had the impression that Nvidia intentionally does not update the OpenCL support and does not fix bugs there, in such as way as to "gently" push developers away from OpenCL and into CUDA.

(about my statement, indeed my "OpenCL programs usually don't work on CUDA" was imprecise)

NVIDIA supports opencl badly, I would make a test to see performace comparison of NVIDIA CUDA and NVIDIA openCL.
