They are a reliable and safe choice. (We value that!)

They come stock with lower clock speeds and usually can't be OC'd but I have a couple EVGA Founder Edition 1080s and installed their hybrid cooler kit on them. They now clock over 1900Mhz, temps stay below 60C running at 100% utilization and it's quiet.

This might be a glass half empty vs half full type thing, but the clocks of Founders Editions are basic, that is they may not be "factory overclocked" as other card designs might. They certainly can still be overclocked, but you might hit the limit sooner due to the cooling performance.

When we run TF work we undervolt anyways, so fancy cards are not that important to us.

Here is our 1080 Ti at 50% power:

At current Ethereum prices, difficulty, and reward, it's still profitable to buy cards like the 1070. The shift to Casper/PoS will nerf the profitability though.

The Gigabyte GTX 1080 I paid 750+ USD, not quite a month ago, is now 629 USD. So, something is changing.

I did some reading about crypto-currency, data-mining, or whatever one chooses to call it. Let's take NIceHash Miner 2, for example. Many using that are complaining in the support groups about bugs in the software and, most importantly, not being paid. It appears they, meaning NiceHash, are in-the-red, big-time.

People were spending lavishly for hardware to run this on. One individual wrote about having a Titan V rig, with an 8th generation Intel CPU. He thought he could pay for all this in about 18 months mining. Now, he doubts he will ever break even.

There is an old saying about something being too good to be true, then it probably is. All of this seems to fit, with a little bit of Murphy's Law mixed in.

Back to my 1080, I feared prices would soar if I didn't go for it then. Given the circumstances, I feel I made the correct decision at that time. I have no regrets.

A friend takes this next story as a sign cryptocurrencies have jumped the shark:

[No relation, btw, except in the Kevin Bacon if-you-take-enough-hops-through-the-human-kinship-graph sense. All this talk of bacon is making me hungry!]

I have totally opposite experience on mining. I stick with XPM ( Primecoin) ,there is few pools to mine, or you can mine solo . One XPM is currently around 2$, ( yes, big change in price) and in few days will new miner for CUDA card ( read Nvidia) will be released. It is coin that is stable for several years, and looks OK:

The Gigabyte GTX 1080 I purchased just over two months ago has dropped in price over $200 USD. Now $559 on Amazon.
