Does it have to be an acronym and does it have to be witty?

How about: The Mersenne Project

It has gravitas comparable to that of "The Cunningham Project".

Searching for "gimps" on Google gives www.mersenne.org as the top hit but the first page (for me, YMMV) and is interspersed with a couple of links to the well-known image editor.

Searching for "The Mersenne Project" on Google gives me pages and pages of quite nicely related articles. One exception: On page three for me, there's one about a clavichord that sadly leads to a 404 page. Looking into that now...

Problem is you can prove mersenne exponents can only be one of two places in a cunningham chain of first kind ( at least the not generalized version).
