I love eating meat and looking for primes, so maybe this will help offset some of the environmental impacts of both activities. Here's how it works - go to the site below, and click on the link near the top to save the rainforest. You can do this a maximum of once a day*. Once you're done, post here and update the "running total" so that it includes the amount of land you saved.
Let's see if we can get it to a significant area, perhaps one acre, before we find the next Mersenne prime. http://www.care2.com/click-to-donate/rainforest/ Running total: 3.7 square feet Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with that site in any way and cannot confirm whether or not any land is being conserved by clicking on it. *Yes, you can click multiple times a day by clearing your cookies and changing your IP address, but we'll rely on the honor system. |

You don't live in a tropical country, do you?
Here there is a continuous war against the vegetation. You let any parcel of land untouched for few weeks, especially in the rainy season, and the weeds are 2 meters tall. One of the most looked for, and the best paid jobs in the coquettes neighborhoods of the city is gardener. We must call ours every month, and in the rainy season more often, to trim down the weeds and trees around the house, as they grow freaking fast, and can harbor different cute thingies, like snakes, etc... The gardeners come like commando troopers, with pickup cars, all kind of tools, black hoods on their heads (to protect themselves against the sun), etc. making war-like noises too, with their "weapons", it is a "lot of fun" to see them at work. And they are costly too.. . Going out "into the jungle" it is an adventure, in all aspects. I don't mean places which are kept "nice" for tourists, like "tiger kingdom" and "flight of the gibbon" (zip-lining over the jungle), or the "jungle" you see in the movies, I mean real jungle... where you can't go forward until you dull three blades of the scythe and two of the hatchet for every meter you advance... And then, to come back, you need another set of scythe and hatchet, because the vegetation just grew back behind of you during you were blinking... Don't get me wrong, I am not a friend of the guys who cut down old trees or burn the grass just because they can... I would any time play some of the Vlad games with them ("the revenge of the plum tree") , but I think that (same as with the "global warning") there is too much noise done about protecting the rain forest, and all the similar things, and a lot of people get rich from funds and donations which never reach the places where they may indeed help to protect the nature. What do you mean? Climate is changing every day and every second, for the last 4 billions and half years (if I am not mistaken about Earth's age). "do you believe in climate change" is all together a tricky question, a mean question, and a silly question, like "do you believe in water being liquid?", or "do you believe in the sky being blue?". Of course I believe the climate changes. Every second, it rains somewhere where it didn't rain a second ago, for example. So what?

No, I don't. But I do know that the jungle is hot, humid, and filled with annoying flying insects. There's stuff in the jungle that you can eat, there's stuff in the jungle that you can't eat, and there's stuff in the jungle that can eat you.
With that said, the world's rainforest area is decreasing, and there's some value in preserving that ecosystem. If anything, these clicks help mitigate the criticism that the prime-finding community is hurting the environment by wasting electricity for no practical use. So I clicked on those links again to save another 73.7 square feet today, and we're now up to - Current total: 151.1 square feet saved since last Mersenne prime discovery |

Ok. Your last post convinced me, so I clicked it. I may make a donation in the future (just few bucks) if I get in a better mood (read: I will need to do some research first, before sending my money to some nigerian guy).
But we have a problem with the units (I think the site found out my geographic location and served me the adequate food): Your click saved 3.7 sq. ft. of rainforest today. Come back tomorrow to click; Together we've saved 11,302.6 acres of rainforest. (how does the "since ..." part comes about? or you compute this manually?) The cynic in me thinks these are just pure advertising sites with a cover message to make you think they are doing something worthwhile.
![]() The capitalist arsehole in me thinks I should setup care3.org.givememoney and make a copy site, but instead offer 3.8 sq.ft. for each click (but of course keep all the money). $$$ The righteous prick in me thinks I should setup an auto-click farm to drain their advertisers of funds to try and stop the nasty cancerous advertising networks. ![]() The sceptic in me thinks I should do research into whether or not there are actual funds going somewhere to save the rainforest. ![]() So many choices, which should I choose?

The overall tone of your post slightly points to the first option, though

So, each click will generate somewhere around $0.50 / 1000 == 0.05 cents. Even if this is true, I question if 5% of a cent actually buys 3.7 sq. ft. of rainforest. But I could be wrong. |
