I think it would be cooler to represent the 2^77232917-1 by bolding the decimal digits as appropriate. Instead of having it rendered as a screen (read: grey) in the background.

This can be done very easily in PostScript by rendering the digits in Regular, then setting a mask for the 2^... string, and then rendering the digits again as Bold.

Hey All.

So, Jon asked me for some help with the poster, in case Uncwilly's people aren't able to provide a solution space and he has to get it printed himself.

I was thinking of writing some Perl code to produce some PostScript code which could then be sent to a PostScript rendering engine (most likely a printer). As an experiment I tried importing M50 into Scribus and after ten minutes (and consuming 28 GB of RAM) it wouldn't let me set the font size to be smaller than 10 points. I don't know if PageMaker or QuarkXPress et al would do any better.

The code would accept various parameters like Width and Height of the output, margins, Fonts, Font Sizes, large background "2^77,232,917-1 is Prime" string, and optional footer strings (like "2^77,232,917-1 is Prime. Discovered by J. Pace, G. Woltman, S. Kurowski, A. Blosser, et al. December 26th 2017.").

So, I would like to know if anyone else thinks this is worth the effort? And, if so, what fonts would people suggest we use for the decimal digits, the "watermark" string, and the optional footer text. Suggested fonts should be Open Source or Creative Commons, as they will have to be embedded in the PostScript file.

This will take me a little bit of time to complete. It's been a while since I coded in PostScript (will have to rewrap my head around the Reverse Polish notation). Also, I have "real" work to do as well.

Another advantage of this is it would be generic enough to be able to produce custom sizes for any of the MPs. So anyone who has an A0 capable printer, for example, could produce their own posters.

Thoughts?

I am not especially fired up about the poster, but I can print 17" wide on roll stock (40, 50, 100 feet, depending on the paper type.) I imagine commercial printers would be a better bet. However, this photo inkjet could do fabulous background images.

I wish I had seen this sooner but we do professional printing of this sort. For the last 5 years we've been printing various impossible posters with good success.

Specific to primes posters, we offer Mersennes 37 and 38 and we are finishing up a Mersenne 51 poster which is actually a set of 12 posters where each is 13x26 inches containing 2 million or so digits at just over 1pt in size. The 12 posters will be arranged as 2 rows of 6. The digits are the star but there are cool colors too.

Mersenne 51 could be ready in as soon as 1 week from today. We have a couple of general primes posters as well, all following the theme of millions of tiny digits.
