Any chance they're planning a large, easily read, title at the top? At this size they'll either be stored or mounted on long walls, and a title would be useful to draw people over. What title - good question...

277232917-1 is Prime! behind the text of the number. As far as font and color (including possibly coloured paper), I am asking for their opinion. They make their living printing. Quote:
I think that you of all people need not worry about the cost. (You might get one free from a benefactor.) Once this is all done, I can look into getting others made for different primes. I am also asking about quantity discount. |

I will send a reminder email. They are "extended family". The nexus that joins us recently added a new unit. This has had an effect of their life.

I hate to be a curmudgeon, but... the decimal digits of M50 are supremely uninteresting.
The fundamental nature of M50 is, it's umpty-million ones, in base two. I mean, consider a googol (10100). In decimal digits, it's just one followed by a bunch of zeros. However, if you converted it to a non-decimal base like octal or hexadecimal, it would turn into a bunch of randomly-distributed and mostly non-zero digits. Now, would you really print out all those fascinating octal digits and frame them on your wall? Not really, because that set of digits is just an artifact of choosing a number base that's really unsuited to representing the nature of that specific number. |

Printing out the one largest prime proven to this date is more about showing the enormous size of the decimal expansion. As a child, I liked to investigate a poster with a couple of thousands (or maybe even a magnitude more, I don't remember) digits of π for hours. Of course, there was nothing to find except remarkable digit combinations as they could be found in lots of other huge numbers with something like evenly distributed digits (I'm not sure about the nomenclature). Since Jonathan is the discoverer, I really understand his urge to analogify this number somehow. Digital acquisitions are not that handy. Printing it out in binary would be simply boring, so having a base Last fiddled with by kruoli on 2018-01-18 at 12:56 |
