Mersennes with p = 4n+1 {like 5, 13,17, 61, 89, 521...} end in 1 so Mersennes -2 would end in 9. The other Mersennes where p =4n+3 like {7, 19, 31, 107, 127} end in 7 so the final number would end in 5.

Thumbs up

Good thinking! You just eliminated half of the hypothetical M50s.

Now, how many of them have ten of the same digit in a row in their decimal expansion? That's a pretty good leak, really. And it does have them, and a few eight-ers-in-a-row which is of course par for the course for any number of this size.

D'oh, I see! Thanks!

Default Wiki addition? Really?

Not sure who, but someone added an entry to the Mersenne prime wiki page to announce M50.

One problem... the exponent they listed is incorrect.

I edited it to remove M50 from the chart, but it appears someone got a little jumpy. Don't know if it was someone here or not?

The exponent they listed was M77,196,191 and I think that came up somewhere earlier in this thread based on the time of the result and the user account. But that user submits many results and it just so happened that a few different ones came in that day... doesn't mean anything.

Well, once the press release goes out, whoever added that will know for sure they had the wrong one, but c'mon folks... let's just have ourselves an awesome New Year's Eve (and sober up Monday) and the official press release won't be far behind.

It wasn't me.
But I'm pretty active over there, and I'm unable to find the edit. Sure it was on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mersenne_prime? Last edit 07:58, 24 December 2017‎.
