How many currently active, and how has that number evolved over time?

A bit over 6000 in the past year. Go back to 1996, and at one point both the annual and lifetime stats were zero. I don't know of a source for trend data over time. Annual fluctuates a bit as I recall. Announcement of a newly found prime tends to attract new participants.

The stats page show the amount of users that has turned in any result in any category either lifetime or last 365 days:
https://www.mersenne.org/account/?details=1

The primenet stats page shows active users in the last 30 days, 7 days and 24 hours. But active I think just means contacting the server requesting work, updating progress and not necessarily turning in any results:
https://www.mersenne.org/primenet/

Lifetime: 30,008 users
365 days: 6,030 users
30 days: 4,948 users
7 days: 3,442 users
24 hours: 2282 users

Yes. Lifetime stat would necessarily ramp up or stay constant, since it is an accumulating count. What I referred to as trend data would be how the participant stats changed over time, for a fixed duration (whether an interval of a year, month, week, or day). Number of participants is a somewhat arbitrary unit for a stat, since some join and quit without returning any useful result, others contribute one or more useful results and quit, while some others run fleets of hardware for years or decades and individually produce thousands of distinct novel results. There are some particularly sad (wasteful) abandoned efforts, where a primality test was discontinued, at least from the point of view of the primenet server, after 75% completion or even above 90%.

I completed a DC that someone had been within about a day of completing. It made me kind of sad that they were SO Close, and lapsed for who-knows-what-reason.

It certainly suggests server-side enhancements which would allow retrieval of such abandoned assignments - assuming the system in question is still online once in a while - and giving the savefile needed for restart to an active client to finish.
