I had a similar problem recently. It turned out that my version of Firefox was missing a couple of root certificates that I needed.
Fortunately, Brian's version had them, so the import was easy and secure!

Thanks, Nick. Updating has certainly been suggested. I should follow through on that course.

This IS A TEST OF 56.0, which failed.

If you like the classic interface there are forks available. I am currently using PaleMoon which is based on Firefox 27 but receives security updates. You might try Waterfox that will continue to support the old plug-ins like "Classic Theme Restorer".

(It is a pity that so many software developers want to impose their view on how we should work and what layout our screen should have. Very often the customisation options still exist in the code but are hidden because "they" know what we should like.)
I did adopt the ESR path, currently at 52.7.3 (64-bit). There is a 52.8.0, which I assume is still tolerant of specific styles and layouts.
I do need to look at the other branches you mentioned, in case this path gets too modern for me.
EDIT: I see that the download pages offers the "new super-fast" FF 60, along with the "older version."
