I can do 35 horses in 10 5-wide comparisons.
My best so far in 8 is 27 horses. I am finding it hard to extend the solution for 25 in 7. |

An attempt
First 5 races are arbitrary. It is possible that the 3rd place horse is Third place overall. This would imply that The 2nd place horse overall placed 2nd In the first race. This is incomplete analysis. Regards Matt |
