I'm stopping DC today ahead of possible 35C temperature on Monday and Tuesday. My electricity company will be getting barely over their standing charge from me for a while, apart from the cost of running the aircon should it become unbearably hot for me.

This heat wave is fine to me, this happens once per year here in the UK. I don't need AC nor have it...lol.

I was a little astonished. My provider, Duke Energy, operates over 100 power stations. Six of these are BWR nuclear plants in South Carolina. The rest are a mix of about everything. Coal, natural gas, hydro, solar, fuel oil, battery, and others I cannot recall. My rate never seems to change much regardless of the weather. From what I see above, others are not so fortunate.

The good news is that in Germany the EEG-taxes were canceled and the price for a kwh drops from 29 cent to 26 cent,
which will count for me up to 31.8.

The bad news is that my electric provider will charge 64 cent for a kwh + 114 Euro base price / year.
This will influence my participation for Gimps.

The bill I paid in mid July was $107 USD. The one this month is $143 USD. There have been quite a few days of 95°F (35°C) or above days since the end of June. What I am paying for is usage from mid June to mid July. A person might think they would do this by calendar month, but they do not.

Started this year to make some heating tweakings plus demand reduction. Jan to Sep 2022 Vs 2021 I've managed to drop the kWh(e) by 13% and the kWh(th) by 32.5%. No weather normalisation was done. All manual control. Despite the energy rate going up my energy supplier owns me money. Let's see what happens during next heating season.

I am sick and tired of media reports giving utility rate disinformation in the form of how much a "typical" or "average" customer might pay. And that goes double for news stories that mention rates like price per kilowatt hour, but then don't give the actual numbers!

I mention this now because the UK's new PM Liz Truss has unveiled an emergency energy "price cap," which many news accounts give as "energy price guarantee at £2,500/yr on typical use."

As far as I can tell, the cap is on the rates customers will be charged (price per kWh). AFAICT the limits imposed by the regulatory agency Ofgem are now
  • 7p per killowatt hour (p/kWh) for gas
  • 28p/kWh for electricity
  • A standing charge of 27p per day for gas
  • A standing charge of 45p per day for electricity

If my understanding is correct, rates are due to go up 91% for gas and 70% for electricity October 1.

Calling from UK, the above is correct. Here people can easily decrease the kWh(th) by 50% but they think they are living in a tropical country.

Since the temperature in London hit 40 C (104 F) in late July, that may be understandable.

However, the usual line I've heard is that it's rainy and chilly there much of the time. Room temperature 15 C (59 F). Ale served at room temperature. Men always wearing wool suits to ward off the chill.

My parents had an LP record entitled At the Drop of a Hat by Flanders and Swann. One of the numbers is A Song of the Weather.

I believe my outdoor A/C compressor may need servicing next spring. I took another hit for mid-July to mid-August. Roughly $35 USD above average. There were lots of days above 90°F during the billing cycle. This is typical for my latitude.

A peaceful night for you,

my electric rate in Germany have increased from 33 cent / kwh to 50 cent / kwh from 1.1.2023
I can change my electric company during 14 days, but there are no real alternativs at the time.
There will be support from the german department, which will pay 80% electric rate over 40 cent /kwh

I will make a small "coffee break" until recomputing for Gimps.
