Default Search restrictions

This is a forum on which it is sometimes actually useful to be able to search for (say) a 71-digit number that you saw as a factor in a file and don't know whether you reported. Is there any way that the search functionality could be altered to allow such searches, rather than to say that the search word is too long?

Why not just use google, e.g. with the search string:

Code:
site:mersenneforum.org 288363872191768892050551279270150054945736765655279

the one dilemma then is you may get only threads and not the actual posts so you might have to search inurl: .... to find the correct version of it or only the individual posts.

One problem I get is that external search sites have a different pagination than my default. Sometimes the result shows as page 4, or whatever, but it is in page 2 for me when I visit the thread. To avoid this I would have to log out and then visit the page with the forum default pagination.

when I was looking for dollar sign threads that may have been messed up I was wishing google had the printthread versions where it shows all the tags etc. as text at times ( I'll admit I'm not sure it would have helped).

Would not a right justified substring of the original, rather than the entire number, work?

playing around it looks like the search string limit is 25 digits before it says it's too long searching by user may help a bit and possible forum but I took the number posted in the second post here down to 25 digits or lower and it didn't find it. edit: I'll try something 9270150054945736765655279 see if posting it outside a code tag only to 25 digits length ( or longer I'll play around, in case it takes the whole thing to be a full word) helps. length of the string outside code tags didn't stop it finding my posting of 26 last digits when searching 25 last but did stop GP2's post from showing in search results. edit2+: one way to alleviate this part is to search for code in your search narrows it down to post where you are talking about codes you made or that have the code: above the code which finds GP2's post but not using the number itself clearly. so it might be helpful to know if someone used code tags to post it to not.

Apparently, No!

So now that I have some time to actually test my question I see that the forum routine doesn't find anything that isn't a whole word. Rather more limited than suspected!

I shall play more, but I can't see anything else to try ATM...

Outside search engine is much more effective. Problems acknowledged, but the internal search is terribly limited.

Or I suppose the another solution is to stop finding 71-digit factors. Limit your factors to 25-digits.

it found my post with only 25 digits of the 26 I posted it's also about is it in code tags etc. if so it doesn't look to look for it. faster then to look for the code: that is above the codes themselves and find all instances of code: in the subforum you want to search. it doesn't anymore though weird.
