Newbie question about current users hardware running GIMPS

Yesterday I recently decided to start using this in my spare time because I bought myself overkill hardware for my needs about 3 months ago and figured I could do something productive with it than basically idle. I have a gtx 1080 and Ryzen 7 1700 @ 3.8 ghz

For gpu computing in mfaktc it's saying ~1,100 ghz/d per day and on the normal prime95 I'm running it on 8 threads/16 and the beginning estimated time of M46029713 was 48 hours or so. (I'm not sure where to find out how much ghz/d it will give me until it's done)

You will probably get better overall Prime95 throughput if you run two or more workers. Experiment.

I've been thinking of getting similar hardware, but I have no "need". :-)

Does that mean more workers working on different tasks or do they work on the same task? I'm probably just going to stick to gpu factoring after I finish one of these (Currently at 16.42%)

I've only had three computers in my life so far. The first one was absolutely horrible,the second was all right, and now I decided I'd get relatively close to as good as I can to last me for the next couple of years or so. I like having it to have it.

About cooling issues :

- My new laptop is a hard gamer laptop with a lot of fans. It lies on an additional external fan.
- I installed Stopthrottle to control and slow down the CPU. With Kaby Lake processors, you have the "Shift Speed - EPP" option wich is very efficient to control the speed and temperature of the CPU. I've been limiting the speed to +/- 1.8 GHz while the CPU can run at 2.8 GHZ (without Turbo Boost)

So,
- GPU temperature is around 70°-72° Celsius (never hotter than 73°) while the maximum is 91° for this chip.
- CPU temperature =+/- 74° with 1 worker and 4 cores active. LL for a 77.8 M exponent takes about 9 days full time (not accurately measured).

I hope those actions are sufficient to prevent overheating problems.

That's quite a setup for a laptop. Controlling the temps in this way, in theory, you could run it nonstop indefinitely. Do you periodically 'cycle' the battery or leave it plugged all the time?

Laptop is plugged in all the time.

Then you should remove the battery or it will be ruined with time, unless they improved laptop batteries substantially in the last 6 years. Because I ruined the batteri in my laptop from 2011 by leaving it plugged in all the time without using the battery.

A number of recent laptops (Dell comes to my mind, likely other producers as well) have a BIOS profile "always plugged in" to somehow preserve battery life. FWIW, I've a positive feedback on this, after 2.5 yrs of continuous usage.

I had a laptop about nine years ago. It was a Dell. It would not power on, even plugged, unless the battery was in it. IMHO, laptops are fine if one is going from place-to-place and portability is a must-have. I am old-school and prefer a desktop; no AIO's either.
