Default Titan Black

My Titan Black died It was running pretty warm at 84-85C and I was planning to dust off the computer again. But yesterday the computer shut down while I was in another room and it started to smell like very warm electronics.

I could not get the computer started again until I switched to another old Geforce graphic card, so everything else works luckily. I wonder if the fan died so it got much hotter, because it should not fry at 85C.

This sucks :( Since there is no place to buy original Titan or Titan Black anymore with the good DP performance. I guess there are Titan Blacks on amazon and ebay, buy I would probably get scammed ordering a card from there.

I have bought more than one graphics card from Ebay sellers with no problems. These include at least two GTX 580s and a GTX570. I am running one of the 580s now. Look at the seller's reputation rating. Ebay has a procedure to deal with unacceptable items.

I see you're dead now, my dearest titan black
No LL any more, I need a titan black
I see the eBay sales but I'm not into those
I feel I'll get ripped off and thus I'm not disposed...

It is only 15 months since I bought it, and it should have 2 year warranty even if I run CUDA applications on it I guess. I will try to contact the store I bought it from first.

ATH,
Does the fan turn smoothly ( by hand ) or does it seem to have a lot of friction?
If so, your fan may have fried ( probably the bearings). This would cause the
board to shut down. I saw a Titan's fan on ebay for 68 US dollars.
Be aware that other components ( like VRMs ) may have also fried.

Also, another problem might be one of the capacitors may have popped.
If you google "video card capacitor replacement" you will see about 3 or 4 youtube
videos and a few articles. They may also explain how to tell if that's the problem.

When I run cuda on my air-cooled video cards, I ALWAYS use an over clocking utility
to boost the fan speed a fair amount to provide more cooling. It helps A LOT!

Just my 2 cents, good luck.

Thank you for the advice.

I was running the GPU fan at 100% using Nvidia System Tools, which is probably higher than it would have run by itself. Do you mean you can go above "100%" as shown in GPU-Z ?

Since there is probably warranty on the card still, I'm going to talk to the store first, and because I have never used a soldering iron in my life, I do not want to start working on replacing capacitors.

I went against my own advice and ordered a Titan Black on Amazon, and of course it does not work

I need to test again tomorrow maybe in another PCI-E slot. But now the computer would not start up at all with the card in it, and worked fine as soon as I put my old Geforce back in the same slot.

Power mosfet shorted on 12V line. I already had 5 of them like that, from 6 bought, 3 of them broken 2 time times (that is, after I repaired them once). Currently having only 1 working, which is heavily underclocked, and waiting for some components which I ordered, and/or better solutions...

Airsquirrel said in the past that he will send 3 more to me, but I guess he changed his mind meantime, or he succeeded to repair them by himself.

Look at the Ebay site.
http://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/
I believe that DOA would qualify as "not as described", unless the seller said it did not work. If they claimed it did, as in: "Like new condition, never overclocked, etc." Then there is an implicit statement of functionality.

Ebay suggests that you contact the seller first through this page:
http://resolutioncenter.ebay.com/
This puts you on Ebay's radar, as it were. Contact Ebay through the link above, as well.

It is good to start with contact to the seller, if only to make a show of believing in their good faith in the transaction. This may be the case, and you may resolve the issue.

I believe that you have recourse in this situation. I urge you to pursue it.
