Could also be that this is about the SIGHUP issue. Maybe it does not write any files on shutdown.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

At this stage I'm thinking it might be something to do with perhaps some of the machines are sleeping and others aren't. They're all *supposed* to be configured the same way but this is the best I can think of.

To answer some questions.

1. mprime is being run under an administrator account and is configured to run as a background process via a crontab entry upon restart. This I know is happening correctly.

2. I configured every machine in the same way - I copied the folder across, edited the local.txt file to provide a machine name, edited the crontab file to ensure the process started and waited for cron to start the job. every machine contacted the primenet server and received it's own assignment so I'm sure that part worked.

I think I will push out an update to the script which starts it and redirect stdout to a file rather than /dev/null and see if I can pickup anything from that.

Cheers,
Chris.

LOL... When I was a supermod I challenged you for continuously attacking Cheesehead (in the private "David Hasselhoff" admin thread). As penance you changed your avatar image to flip between you beside a hot car, and a bully beating up a child.

Mike said at the time that if you showed up at his door asking for several thousand dollars and a gun, he would give it to you.

Cheesehead - you mean the same fellow you recently mocked as a "lightweight" in Soap Box, right?

Tweren't me that fiddled my avatar - my browser has image-display disabled, so I never see the dang things to begin with - someone else PMed me to chuckle about the new av, that was my first inkling. Both the Hoff-atar and the Calvin-and-Hobbes one are Xyzzy specials, I believe. Not that I object to either! All in good fun.

Nice to know Xyzzy has my back in case I'm ever on the run from the goons in black vans, though - thanks, Mike! Hope I never need to take you up on your offer, but still.

Chris, go ahead and keep taking out your frustrations on the n00bs ... you can estimate your longevity around here in that mode by asking yourself "how do my math and software contributions to the forum compare to those of the late, great RDS?"

I think I may have smoked too much of that straw used in making mud-bricks. Some German fellow named Ziegler got me started on that nasty habit, alas.

To the rest of our readers, I apologize for feeding the troll (no, not GP2, the other guy) - back on-topic!

I also apologize.

Some around here have an open cheque.

Thanks everyone for a most interesting thread.

I'm pretty sure the problem lies with some of the mac's sleeping (when they're not supposed to) and that's why the large difference in the progress of different machines.

On the plus side, I have managed to lose some of my brickness during this investigation on two fronts, I know a little more about how the mprime software works, and I've discovered a few things about my iMacs which I wasn't aware of.

Cheers,
Chris.

Excellent!

Learning how to deal with insults with equanimity and still making progress in real life is a skill well worth developing. It's a pity so few seem to manage to do so.

So very true. I'm currently personally working this problem domain. Haven't been terribly successful thus far.

Ye' forgot "at 2 o'clock in the night". That is important... (seriously, think about it!)
I wish for some friends like Mike... hehe
(edit: to be clear: I would go door to door and collect their guns and dollars )
