Default recognise this easily?

A machine with not very high specs being used for ECM starts off quiet. After a couple of days it gets louder like it's going into overdrive sounding not unlike a small hoover.

My diagnosis is that it's the PSU having to supply more power and so the fan of it speeds up but I don't think this is more than about 60% likely.

Sounds like dust or a bad bearing.

Checked PSU. No dust. CPU : tiny amount.

Yeah, but it may also be a fan bearing going bad in either the PSU or on the CPU cooler.

Tried giving the fan housing in question a good whack or two? That cured similar grinding noises coming from one my Haswell-quad's case fans over the weekend.
