Hello, I'm new here.
I have an i7-4790k and I'm asking if it is bad the cpu that it's working 24/7 (at 76°c average and 80°max) ? Same question for my motherboard (msi z97 pc mate with the same temperature). I've done the torture test for 10 hours without any issues but I don't know if it can endure it 24/7 (with 1 or 2 breaks for a night per week) or if it can disturb the performances of my cpu. I'm sorry if there is some mistakes, my english isn't perfect. |

Those temperatures are fine.

Some of the older PIVs had faulty mother boards and capacitors failed. Since then I have not had any issues in those temperature ranges. |

A more general answer:
Running a CPU 24/7 allows the silicon to operate in a consistent temperature range, reducing the possible mechanical stresses caused by thermal expansion and contraction. It is possible that running prime searches 24/7 lengthens the life of the CPU! It is widely believed that a CPU will be too old to be useful long before it fails electrically from use; as an example, I used a Celeron-550 (Pentium 3 era) for almost 9 years of 24/7 prime searching; in 8 of those years it was overclocked to 850mhz or higher. CPUs can fail from overheating; that's why the previous replies specifically addressed your reported temperatures. Intel has pretty good circuitry to reduce clock speeds if temps get too high, which means Prime95 can be used to determine when to clean the dust out of your machine (when Prime95 performance slows, the CPU is throttling back its speed because of heat, thus time to clean!) |
