Why is it that I usually (or at least often) see abandoned LL double checks from years ago for first time assignment I just recently completed?

Those are just older assignments for the same exponent that became expired before you got your assignment. Once an LL result was submitted, the work type of those other assignments became "DC" instead of "LL". Nothing unusual here.

Oh ok. Thanks. I didn't realize the work assignment type changed retroactively.

I would go so far as to call it a bug. Work type should be a recording of the state of the exponent at the time the given AID was assigned.

No, it's definitely a feature.

The server does that because first/second checks have different expiration rules, so if something becomes a de-facto double-check, then it can now take longer to finish.

It also helps figure things out internally in a few other areas.

If there were ever a need, it would probably be possible to figure out if it was initially assigned as a first-time or double-check even if it switched to a DC later on, but in the grander scheme of things it doesn't matter so much... the credit given is the same, and in the case of a prime, whoever finds it first gets the credit, no matter if it was assigned first, second, poached, whatever.
