At the very least, it gives you an example of how not to treat others.
A departed friend once said to me, "I give what I get." This can also be reversed. I had never been exposed to such harsh rhetoric as what was being dished out. I did not know such people existed.

So, I will follow the example xilman gives above. As much as I may like, I will not just ignore this sort of thing when it comes along, and it probably will come along again.

Off-topic: If some of the membership here thinks this is bad, go browsing on Facebook and see how nasty they are to each other over things that most here would consider extremely petty.

Any social situation can be described as both a communication system and as a deference-emotion system. The first system enables speakers to make their thoughts known to each other and the second, their evaluation of each other's status.
- from a paper by Inger Lise-Lien.

There are plenty of research papers available discussing the question of where taking offence ends and giving offence begins, some written for psychologists and others, separately, for lawyers.

Perhaps it is worth repeating here that on the Mersenne Forum we encourage critical thinking about ideas but we do not tolerate attacks on people.
