Your association of x²=x with computers throws up another interesting aspect: idempotent functions.
For example (until recently), all operations of the Network File System (NFS) protocol were idempotent (I.e. doing any operation twice had the same effect as doing it once). This had some great advantages, though a few drawbacks as well!
