One of my "set-and-forget" computers, an i7-2600, suddenly changed from using 1 CPU to 4 CPU's.

This computer is used for other work as well, therefore only 1 core used.

Is there a way to tell P95 online to use only 1 CPU (on computer info it shows LL for all 4 cores), or do I have to manually change this on the computer.

I think you can only do this from the client within your computer. Online, you can choose which core gets what type of work but I don't see a "Assign Nothing" option.

If you can remote access it you can change it that way in the text files. ssh and the like. If that isn't possible, then yea, I think you'd have to change it in situ.

Probably, whoever is using the computer discovered Prime95, thought, “I do not need that,” and tried deleting the folder. That killed the configuration files, but left the executable that was running; so now it is running with default settings.

By the way, Prime95 running with default settings will concede resources to any other running task. You can run Prime95 on all four cores and barely notice it, even if it is running at 100%. It was originally designed to use up spare CPU cycles without taking them away from whatever else is running.

Unless you have HT on. In which case the OS thinks, "well here is a free core or four I can use without interrupting that nice little P95", and then schedules things on a half core, slowing everything down.

I have seen some programs have issues when P95 is running.

When trying to do an upgrade of Adobe Reader to X a while back, the transfer across the network was going very-very slow. Stopped P95 and zoom-zoom done in a trice.
Our in house time-keeping software has an issue once the user logs in, it goes slow loading. Stop P95 for just a fraction of a second, and the load speed is good.
On one of several identical machines (my desk machine at work), the pop-up from the systray to safely remove hardware is very unresponsive (or slow) with P95 running. This does not seem to be an issue on the other machines that are clones (same original disk image.) Again, pause P95 for just a touch and it everything is speedy.

Other programs which I frequently use and are hit by P95 are autocad, altium protel, solid works, and other that request resources to work in background at low priority (like 3d graphic/math libraries from modeling), where they share the time slice with P95. You can raise the priority of those programs (acroread included) in win7, but that means P95 will do almost nothing as long as they are opened, even if you don't use them (like solid works libraries stay always open in the background, doing nothing, until you kick them out from task manager).

If still bothering, then you can use "pause while running" option (see the undoc.txt in P95) - this is the radical solution.

Google Chrome does the same thing for me. Some subroutine is running at the same priority as P95 so I just pause one of the workers if chrome is open. I wasn't aware that so many other programs had that problem (although now that I think of it AutoDesk Inventor did that too)

Adobe was only an issue on the transfer of the install files across the (in house) network, not the actual install.. It was worse than dial-up. The other 2 examples are of little trouble. The in-house timekeeping software is weird in other ways (e.g. until it is past log-in and fully up, it won't show on the task bar and one can't alt-tab to it).
The remove hardware issue is only on one of 4 machines that are basically identical.

Running Photoshop is incredibly slow, unless I pause a couple of P95 workers. This has been discussed here before. I also put the display GPU in Medium mode (GPUSieveSize=48) to free up some cycles for Photoshop, and use "LowMemWhileRunning=photoshop". Since both Bridge and Lightroom have "Photoshop" in their names, they are included in the LowMemWhileRunning class.
