They have now played 2.c4.
Did we all already agree to reply 2...c5 intending the Benko Gambit should they reply 3.d5? Or is anyone having second thoughts? I'm happy, personally, with what we agreed in the last thread. |

Glad to see the move posted so promptly.
If we respond quickly, shouldn't they too?
We'll have to see. They're only as fast as their slowest team member.
Assuming 2. ..c5 3.d5 b5 have you analyzed past move 5 ?
That would be re-doing a lot of work. Here are more than 1300 master games with the opening (the site has yet more too, under ECO codes A57 and A59). http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessopening?eco=A58 |

Suppose 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 d5 b5 4 cxb5 a6 5 bxa6.
Would we take with the rook? ..Rxa6 Or is something else better? ..... I see your Benko's Gambit next play would be ..Bxa6. Is that better than the rook take? Last fiddled with by davar55 on 2015-01-14 at 14:58 |

Would you rather our bishop was then on a6 or our rook? |

OK. I did see the possible move e4 attacking the R with B, but not until I had typed my post, and decided to post it anyway. I agree with ..Bxa6 for that move, and retract ..Rxa6. I like your didactic style of suggestion. |

Yep. And dispensing with the didacticism for a moment: as well as not wanting a discovered attack on the rook, we can use the bishop on a6 to prevent White castling after they move their e pawn. 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.cxb5 a6 5.bxa6 Bxa6 6.Nc3 d6 7.e4 Bxf1 8.Kxf1. White will need several more moves to untangle the kingside and safeguard their king giving us more time to complete our development and get the queenside pressure going. Black has the initiative, White the material advantage of an extra pawn. Chances about equal.

Which means Black has about made up the initial move disadvantage. Nice. OK. We await their third move, d5 or Nf3 probably. Do you think there's any chance they know the variation you have in mind? How good are our opponents? |

In terms of playing strength, well, our WMHalsdorf was on the team which beat them and me in games 1 and 2, so I am hoping I've joined the winning side this time. |

Oh sure. You two are good, and as I posted, I'll be backseat driver and try not to drive anyone off the road (to victory). Maybe next time it should be 5 days per move, not seven (as someone else suggested)? |
