I still want to move all those pesky pawns out of the way and get the big guns into the action.

If we play 2. a4 they will attack a3 with 2. ... e6.

Same idea. Black can move the d pawn and h3 is attacked by the bishop.

c1-g5. Since we have allowed our bishop some freedom can we use it now?

2. Bg5 is possible. Black will most likely reply 2. ... Ne4, attacking our Bishop and f2. We could play 3. Bh4

Alright, I like pawn e2-e3. Let's make some space for the queen and the other bishop. Everything is so cramped down there.

Certainly, e3 is part of the standard opening's position. Whether it should be played on the second move is debatable.

2.c4 is my current preference.
@retina Much as it would be nice to get our rooks out early while we do this our opponent would have plenty of time to secure the centre of the board and make having our rook out useless. In general rooks come into play after castling and other pieces are off the back line. In general control of the centre and development are the aims at the beginning of the game. c4 would cement our position in the centre and allow our knight to move to c3 without blocking the pawn. I will try to find some more good videos on 2.c4. The videos I posted in the last thread show some of what white's aims are in this position. |
