A delay for anything other than 5. bxa6 is fine with me.

Hey I'm still here.
Agreed on ((5. bxa6) ..Bxa6) as was previously discussed. If they make any other move on 5.. or after their 6.. we should discuss, or rather I'll ready myself to think ahead some more. I have to give Brian's suggestions some thought, but not before their fifth move. |

I like (5. (b6) .. a5) as WMHalsdorf suggested, it wide-opens up the Queenside for us
just as this gambit seems to desire, The a6 square is then protected triply, no need to fianchetto the QB, just develop it to a6. The black advanced pawns are vulnerable. If we get even one back, we have position and even points. When we get the Q out Queenside, we'd be immediately attacking their Kingside. If we (soon) develop our Kingside (..g6, ..Bg7, ..O-O) our position has no obvious flaws. Last fiddled with by davar55 on 2015-01-30 at 11:58 |

Why would they move 5. b6? Perhaps to tempt ..Qxb6.
If we did that (instead of ..a5) how would they exploit our premature Q move? |

The move 5.b6 is a method of declining the gambit (returning the pawn) in order to avoid (some of) the open queenside lines which Black has in the accepted Benko Gambit. I don't think our queen would be particularly vulnerable and exposed after 5...Qxb6, and on the contrary b6 is a good active square for it, but we can also delay capturing on b6 anyway. As well as 5...Qxb6, the most frequent responses are 5...d6 and 5...e6.
5...a5 is a rarer response, though occasionally seen. The advantages of the move which both of you describe are offset by (1) a weakening of our b5 square, and (2) loss of time when we should be developing our pieces. I don't like the move. I suggest we discuss this further in the (rather unlikely) event that they play the move 5.b6. |

I'm not married to (b6)..a5, just thought it looked playable.
If we delay ..Qxb6 by playing ..d6 or ..e6 instead, what follows? |
