While that is certainly one option to consider, I'd advise a more conventional opening to allow control of the center with a slow build-up of strength. There are a wide variety of openings discussed on numerous youtube videos which can be reviewed. While the use of chess engines is not allowed, we can certainly use other online info to check out various openings.

If we play 1.e4, they are most likely to reply with The Sicilian Defence -- there are plenty of youtube videos about the strategies employed with it.

There are plenty of openings other than e4 that we can consider that are well analysed.

I can see I am going to have to learn the symbols you are using. 1.a4 and 1.e4 :ermm:
I need a search engine, what is the URL for google.com? Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_notation Are we using "Figurine algebraic"? That one looks best to me. ♘f3 ♞c6 Last fiddled with by retina on 2014-12-22 at 16:23 |

Getting those chess piece symbols is hard. We have been using "algebraic". You will soon get used to it. If your chess board does not have it marked on it, draw out a board on a piece of card and mark the ranks 1-8 and the files a-h.
It took me a while to get used to "algebraic" notation. I learnt "descriptive" and a lot of books I read as a youth used that. |

Yes. Avoiding a Sicilian Defence opening would suit me. Can you suggest an alternative to 1.e4? |

We can use these symbols, if you insist, but when we play our move we will have to use algebraic.

In terms of looking for viable openings a site like http://chesstempo.com/game-database.html is useful.
It looks like e4, d4, Nf3, c4 and g3 are all viable moves. My initial thought is go for d4 as it is different to the previous games. |

I suggest using youtube to look at various chess openings. Since I am a two-time loser, I'm willing to try something different.
