Okay. So when I upgrade and I am supposed overwrite the previous version... Do I just change the name of the location I am unzipping the file to so that it is the name of the previous version of P95?

The default location is C:\Users\Kyle\Downloads\p95v285.win64.... should I change this to C:\Users\Kyle\Downloads\p95v279.win64 which contains the current version (and then just rename the folder)?

I know this is a dumb question but I'm a little bit paranoid about losing progress as I have an exponent that is close to finishing.

Yep, that will do it. To me, Downloads is something like a temporary directory. I'd suggest that you move it from Downloads to a more "permanent" location, so that e.g. if you want to free up space by deleting unused downloads and do Ctrl+A->Delete, you won't accidentally delete your working Prime95 files.

You can copy/paste the entire directory for a quick backup.

Just replace your Prime95.exe (or whatever the Windows executable name is) with the new one. Don't overwrite any of the other files as you may lose your settings and work in progress.

p95v285.win64.zip contains only:
Code:
license.txt
prime95.exe
readme.txt
stress.txt
undoc.txt
whatsnew.txt
You can overwrite all of these files without losing any work: they are all static files (by which I mean, they do not change as you get, run, and complete work). You do, of course, want to exit Prime95 before beginning the upgrade, so that you can overwrite prime95.exe. I'd agree that you should not overwrite any other files, since they are probably generated ones, and modifying them might make you lose your work.

Update was completed successfully. Thank you. The jury is out on whether or not it has resulted in a speed boost.

You're right. I was wrong. Thanks for clarifying that for Primeinator!
