That was the drugs those people had taken. I didn't get any.

We have earthquake insurance for our home because we live here:

The lack of quake-related building codes is not unique to the New Madrid zone. After the 1906 quake in San Franciso, great efforts were made by business and municipal authorities to emphasize the subsequent firestorm damage over that of the earthquake.

Quote:
Property losses from the disaster have been estimated to be more than $400 million in 1906 dollars.[6] This is equivalent to $11.2 billion in 2018 dollars. An insurance industry source tallies insured losses at $235 million, the equivalent to $6.55 billion in 2018 dollars.[40][41]

Political and business leaders strongly downplayed the effects of the earthquake, fearing loss of outside investment in the city which was badly needed to rebuild.[42] In his first public statement, California governor George Pardee emphasized the need to rebuild quickly: "This is not the first time that San Francisco has been destroyed by fire, I have not the slightest doubt that the City by the Golden Gate will be speedily rebuilt, and will, almost before we know it, resume her former great activity".[43] The earthquake itself is not even mentioned in the statement. Fatality and monetary damage estimates were manipulated.[44]
I did not immediately find the example I am thinking of, but the coverup included retouching photographs to change the impressions of the kinds of damage which were caused.

Not just the authorities.

A page about the 1906 SF earthquake I mentioned here says
Quote:
Due to a widespread practice by insurers to indemnify San Francisco properties from fire, but not earthquake damage, most of the destruction in the city was blamed on the fires. Some property owners deliberately set fire to damaged properties, in order to claim them on their insurance; this ultimately served no purpose, as wealthier citizens of the city shouldered the costs of repairing an estimated 80% of the city. Capt. Leonard D. Wildman of the U.S. Army Signal Corps reported that he "was stopped by a fireman who told me that people in that neighborhood were firing their houses... they were told that they would not get their insurance on buildings damaged by the earthquake unless they were damaged by fire."

There are reports with video footage that a large cruise ship collided with a river cruise ship and with the quayside this morning in Venice:

Warning: I don't think the videoclip here shows the people who fell dangerously into the water but I cannot be entirely certain.
At this stage, there are only reports of light injuries.

There are 2 videos. In one you can see a person on the gangway. You can see the gangway go from roughly horizontal to vertical.

There is now confirmation that only 4 passengers were injured on the river cruiser: most had already disembarked at the end of their cruise, and no crew were hurt.

This accident has reignited the debate about allowing large cruise ships in Venice:

It really seems that such vessels should be made to bring passengers in on tenders.
EDIT: Aside from hazards like this runaway, the article mentions another really obvious hazard: wake erosion. One has to thinks that large ships stir up a lot more muck in the lagoon, as well. Keep 'em at a safe distance; and make tour admission by reservation, as popular US National Parks do.

The Boudicca is currently sailing from Portsmouth (UK) to Le Havre (France), carrying veterans who made the same journey exactly 75 years ago as part of the Normandy landings.
