I think the best reply to 18.a4... is 18...b4. Then, 19.cxb4 Nxb4 and we can defend c4 with Ba6. Our knight on e7 can become active later. :smile:

I agree. The key positional considerations in my mind are: we cannot avoid the weakness of our c4 pawn anyway, but we can and should avoid them playing axb5 with a half open a file for their rook and pressure against our a pawn.
EDIT: Incidentally, at the moment I think I prefer, after 18...b4 19.cxb4, 19...axb4 but that's a decision to make when the time comes. Last fiddled with by Brian-E on 2014-01-18 at 11:07 |

Here was the line I studied in post 28 of our Move 17 thread if they replied 19. Nd2:
18. a4 b4 19. Nd2 bxc3 20. Nxc3 O-O 21. Nb5 Ba6 22. Nxc4 Bxb5 23. axb5 Rxb5 which I thought was good for us. I will look further at your line, Brian. David, I hope you excelled on your exams! |

Hoping to hear soon from David, but perhaps this might be a relatively quick move? Unless anyone thinks that any move other than 18...b4 is worth considering, which at the moment I don't.

I am only considering b4. My intention to look further at the line noted above has not been possible yet this week due to work. But I have my hopes! :smile:

I get the feeling we'll have a tricky decision to make next move once we've seen their reply.
For now: 18...b4 gets my vote. |
