Perhaps one could create some 'fake rockband' t-shirt with the famous group 'GIMPS' and a slighlty beefed up portrait (long hair, e-guitar, microphone) of Riemann or George ( ) on the front. On the back, on top the 2^p-1 formula (dripping some blood to add style to rock-band fake), then some 'tour-dates' (the actual dates, places and discovered primes) and at last a 'link' to the the 'www.mersenne.org' fanpage

I would want a polo type shirt, so I can wear them at work.

I like the "fake rockband" idea. Could be really cool.
The polo shirt is a must have for work. |

I don't like very much the "rock band" idea, but will buy whatever could fund GIMPS.

Won't the list of all the GIMPS contributors be rather too long to fit on the shirt?

Well, you could list just the people who actually discovered the primes. :)

We could just list the primes and the dates found by GIMPS, and if room, the people credited. Smaller list. :)
I think having a "Powered by Entropia" tagline somewhere might be nice as well. 2^P-1 on the front for sure, maybe www.Mersenne.org as well if done nicely. No pocket on the polo's please. :) "GIMPS, Powered by Entropia" and maybe www.Mersenne.org on one sleeve (the address here if not on front). And on the other the list of Primes Found in chronological order, something like: Proved PRIME by GIMPS: 2^1,398,269-1 Nov, 1996 2^2,976,221-1 Aug, 1997 2^3,021,377-1 Jan, 1998 2^6,972,593-1 Jun, 1999 2^13,466,917-1 Nov, 2001 2^xx,xxxx,xxx-1 Nov, 2003 I'd by 10 just for work. Like a uniform. :) I'd pay a premium for quality as well. Whomever made the BeOS shirts, they rock. I've worn mine for like 6 years, and it's still looks decent and wearable, even after weekly washings! :D |

Wow, I'm glad the idea was so well received. I'm no graphics designer, so I shouldn't design them. However, we should, IMO, have multiple designs. I would buy the simple 2^P-1 one and probably the Mersenne rock group one.
I believe if we found someone who makes t-shirts we could get a better price and higher quality than Cafepress. Andrew |

All design ideas are really cool. I will buy every proposed design.
But I would also like that we have design with all Mersenne primes listed with dates and names of discoverers on the back (with 2^P-1 formula on the front side). That will show that GIMPS is part of research effort that has really long tradition. This is something that makes me proud to be part of this search. Should we choose someone who will look for t-shirt producer and try to organize everything or just to leave it to be spontaneous? |
