As a temporary "hack", may I suggest (in "meta code"):

Code:
if (Client is v4) {
  SQL_Where statement includes "Exponent>33000000";
}

It would be interesting to compare us to SETI or Folding@Home, or any of the other mainstream BOINC projects, many of which are quite larger than GIMPS.

That doesn't explain, for example, 29776603, assigned only 32 days ago (although no longer a DC).

I don't disagree.

Wasn't there a speed increase for cpus of at most core 2 in 25.x?
I would probably actually prefer the old cpus to be running slightly less efficient code(assuming it stresses the cpu less) as it should produce less errors.
The other thing worth considering is that cpus of that age don't use that much more power running prime95 than not. The load power for my Q6600 is about 1.5x the idle. Pentium 4s are even worse.

Done. Keep an eye on it. Let me know if it worked.

Andy would say sell your computers and go volunteer at a Nursing Home.
Sid would to use your computers to hack into the Nursing Home and fill all the baths with ice water and put Krazy Glue on the Bed-pans.

Well, I'm part-way there, on the Andy side of things. I work for a community social services center, at which I began as a volunteer. I still volunteer my photographic skills at special events.

I will do my best to keep Sid away from my computer. He sounds like a rum lot.

I've got to agree with Chalsall on this one. Banning people is a no-no for sure but I don't think anyone is seriously talking about that. I don't have a huge beef against old hardware either... for DC work... and people who reliably do the work.

I too believe that it is far from unreasonable to expect people to upgrade their software once in five years. The "fire and forget" thing is something I really really like about GIMPS also. My CPU is at 100%, not-display GPU going 100% and my display GPU on Medium at this time, and I don't even notice. I hand in results daily to be a good citizen and occasionally check my prime95 results out of curiosity, which is way more maintenance than I need to be putting in.

On the other hand, someone who has legitimately forgotten might be an unwilling participant. I shudder at the throughput-per-watt of some of the hardware out there. Cut 20% of the power spending and 0.5% of the throughput? CHA-CHING, no?

If someone does NOT want to participate but is still spending power on the project because it's TOO easy to forget about, by killing all V4 (most extreme case) we're doing them a favour. Points in favour of killing V4.

If someone DOES want to participate but goes for years without looking at their software, that's too bad for them. Points in favour of NOT killing V4.

If someone DOES want to participate but does check their software regularly, they've chosen to not update. They'll see that progress has stopped, and if we do what we can to inform them that we've imposed the update, they'll update and things will carry on. Points in favour of killing V4.

It's a matter of figuring out how many people would rather not participate but are because they forgot they were running Prime, how many people do want to participate and actively "forget" for years, and how many people are running V4 out of choice rather than negligence.

I've got to imagine it's mostly the latter. Luigi referenced a few people still using V4. Why ARE you still using V4 if you're fully aware of V5?
