I've just picked up an Atom C2750 system.
It's about the size of a cereal box; uses 20W idle and 32W running eight threads of ecm; ecm performance with eight threads is 60% that of my i7/4770 with eight threads. Unfortunately it heats up at 4C per minute unless I put a fan on top of the heat-sink, but 10cfm of air flow keeps it beautifully cool. Single threads are quite slow - slower than the 2,4GHz Q6600 was, Silvermont cores aren't as performant as Merom cores - but I've got eight of them using really very little energy. Unfortunately the machine cost about the same as the i7/4770 did - the board is exotic enough that I had to buy it through a friend with a small business with an account with a Supermicro reseller, and it takes ECC SODIMMs. It has quad gigabit ethernet; as far as I can tell all this does for me is add the extra risk that some day Linux boot will rearrange the port numbering so eth0 is no longer the one with the cable plugged into it. It requires ubuntu-13.10 or later; ubuntu-13.04 installer kept failing mysteriously, and at the rescue command prompt 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' told me the machine only had one core. Obviously what I really want is six Atom C2750 sharing a PSU and case; this could be done for £1000 but I don't think anyone's planning to do it. Saving my ducats in hopes of 16c/32t Haswell EP dual or quad socket. Oh yes. A man can dream. Still, a dense, decent IPC system like that sounds pretty good too.

That is some nice energy efficiency you got there!
I was looking at Intel ARKs and it states that processor only has the 64bit instruction set. Since it usually states SSE, AVX or something like that, I assume it has none of those? http://ark.intel.com/products/77987 If that is the case, it won't be able to do P-1 and LL/DC test nearly as fast as NFS and ECM I suppose. If only the price would be a bit lower.... The chip+SuperMicro board is €390 in the Netherlands, add +/- €130 for 2x8GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMMs. Something like €520 in total for CPU+mobo+mem combo. You could get a 4770(non-k) for €260 or €190 for a 4670(non-k). €120 for 2x8GB DDR3-1600, which leaves €140 for a decent motherboard and a CPU cooler, that is certainly possible. The 4770 combo will use about 110W or so under load, but can be used for more diverse purposes. |

Fivemack, could you post more detailed benchmarks? I'm just curieus how it performs on other tasks :). |

Windows 8 actually requires SSE2 so all cpus should have it from now on.

Which benchmarks would interest you? Bear in mind I don't own a Windows license; I can offer gnfs-lasieve4I14e, msieve and mprime results.
I've turned the machine off for the moment, because the small 8000rpm fan that I was using for air-flow made it very difficult to think while in the same room as the computer; a better fan should be appearing sometime next week. |

Could you do the Prime95 benchmark, or is that not included in Mprime?
Electricity is quite expensive in the Netherlands (it is heavily taxed), €0.22/kwh if I'm remembering correctly. So running one of these might just be more economically efficient than a 4770. 35W x 24h x 365days = ~307kwh or ~€68 a year 110W x 24h x 365days = ~964kwh or ~€212 a year |
