Good question. I never realised that was the case. I hope it is just a mistake in the configuration.

It's a (possibly temporary, possibly permanent) security precaution. Rather not go into the details....

Hey, just look at what you are missing everyday.

This is how forum would have looked without security measures:

I think we will all agree that there's no good security through obscurity.

Here are two bits of news:
1. http://arstechnica.com/security/2013...0-day-attacks/
2. http://primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=5347 :

In order to reduce spam (you may not notice it, but it annoys the moderators), effective immediately most forums require you to have credit in order to post.

Only the "Help Desk / Problems and Help" forum allows new users to post. That forum is intended for questions from new users having trouble getting started.

I certainly agree with this statement.

Although I would go further, and suggest that there can be upside in not reveling what one knows. Churchill and Turing certainly demonstrated this during WWII.

In the last month we've been getting pounded with drive-by spammers that would post in the no-registration-required subforums. One can only delete 25 posts in the moderation queue so many times before it starts to get old.

We've also had a huge number of spammers auto-register, like several per hour

I am surprised the robot spammers can solve the captcha AND know the answer to "What is 2^32-1?"[1]. Those robot AIs sure are coming along quite well these days.

[1] Although the title for the last check is the somewhat ambiguous "Additional Required Information (option)"
