Default Move 10

We agreed to use the time taken for White's moves to explore our replies. :geek:

Any thoughts about White's possible moves and our replies? It looks like we have a strong position on the queen's side, delaying any attack by white on the king's side, be that either by the queen-bishop combination or a pawn storm.

We looked at two white responses in our Move 9 thread and I think we considered them pretty well:

10. c3 and 10. Qxa5

I don't think they will move 10. Bh6 since we exchange queens then and the bishop move is wasted.

Another response:

10. b4 cxb4
11. axb4 Qxb4
12. Rxa7 QxQ
13. BxQ NxR

Well, they won't do that!

Other options might be their d and e pawns, but that's it for me for tonight. What does everyone think?

I think both 10.Bh6 (10...Nxh6) and 10.b4 (10...Nxb4: the a pawn is not protecting b4 because of ...Qxa1) are simple blunders. But I agree that they have other possibilities apart from 10.c3 and 10.Qxa5.

They may leave the situation on the queenside as it is, continuing their development with a move like 10.Ne2, 10.Nf3 or 10.f4. (Moving either d or e pawn just loses that pawn as far as I can see, Rich.) In that case we will have to decide whether we want to seize the opportunity to exchange queens while we still can, or not.

Generally speaking, if the queens get exchanged, whether they initiate that or we do, then they have no chance of a middlegame attack on our king. Against that, our queen is itself a powerful piece on the queenside at the moment.

My inclination at the moment is that a queen exchange is good from our point of view on balance.

Ahah. They're swapping queens. We're in for a queenless middlegame in which we don't have to worry very much about our king's safety and we can concentrate on our queenside pressure. I'm delighted to see this.

I vote 10...Nxa5. Not anticipating much discussion about this move anymore.

Nxa5 is the only logical response.

I'm up very early today since I'm flying to New York for two and a half weeks to visit family and attend a fall wedding of my nephew in Connecticut. I'll have interenet access.

I agree it is the only logical move. I will either wait for paul or someone to tell me to move.
We may as well move as soon as possible.

Go ahead and post, David. We are four of four for Nxa5.
