It used to be commonplace to say "there are plenty of exponents to go round".
Alas no longer. Chris Halsall has commandiered every exponent whose status is unknown between 45M and 67M. His myopic idea of TFing everything to 74 bits means that many "poor sods" are obliged to take 66M expos for LL while there are lower ones TFed perfectly sensibly to 73 bits. For the last two days he has swept up every returned exponent <60M to distribute to his "smug, self-satisfied" chums in GPUto72. There must be others out there who feel that all this power in one man is totally contrary to the spirit of GIMPS, especially a devious incompetant such as Chalsall. Speak up - you have nothing to lose but your exponent! |

You just never give up, do you David?
To answer your question, George is running GIMPS. I, and everyone else in the GIMPS community, simply assist. |

FWIW, I just went to Manual Assignments and obtained (and immediately threw back-I don't do much LL or DC these days) the following:
Test=98EE126EA0A24EC7xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,53549xxx,72,1From this it would seem that a) Not all new assignments being handed out are in the high 60M range.Really, David. I don't understand your obsession. I am well aware that you know the maths, and that I do not. However, I don't feel particularly smug in what I do. Guilt over spending more on electricity than I can really afford is closer to the mark. Two other things which I would note are that your predicted abuse of "poor sods" does not really seem to obtain, given the above offhand sampling. Also, gratuitously insulting language is the reason cited for your last involuntary vacation from the forum. People here seem mostly to like having you around. Why do you persist in banging on the walls and screaming incessantly until some one or more of the Powers That Be get fed up? EDIT: Furthermore, "smug, self-satisfied chums" (or is that "chumps"?) like me pretty much leave the LL work to others. That, and my 30 day average is currently flattening out at ~800 GHz-days/day, mostly in wavefront TF. I feel that I make things better for those who prefer LL, of which assignments I could be tying up 10 at a time. Just sayin'..... I quickly got and tossed 3 LL's. They were in the 58M range.

I got 6 assignments at right about 54M, all TF'd to 72 bits, with P-1 complete. I'd say that's pretty good. And I did so with a new account, both manually and through Prime95, to make sure that my reputation and method of getting the assignments had nothing to do with it.

I must point out that Chris is unable to "hold a gun" to any user's head. He is likely the only GIMPS person on Barbados, though I could be wrong. If he has influence among a number of users it is probably a matter of acclamation, rather than proclamation. Any terms which I use in his regard which imply authority (Skipper, for instance) are as humorously intended as the expression "She's dead, Jim" in reference to the PrimeNet Server.
As I see it, Chris provides a number of convenient services for those who choose to use them; and those of us who so choose, in turn, crank out a huge amount of work for the project. Since I have seen discussion between George and Chris as to how much work to leave available, and inasmuch as George has not lately intervened, I have to suppose that nothing nefarious is afoot. Surely George or Scott would be aware if there were. (And George [STRIKE]would[/STRIKE] SEE [STRIKE]that[/STRIKE] Scott did something about it.) Why do you suppose that Chris is engaged in evil connivance anyway? That job description is rightfully held by Retina.
